Feedstocks

Oils, fats and soapstock for biogas

Per kilo of organic matter, fat produces more biogas than sugar or protein. That makes oil and fat residues some of the most valuable streams for a digester, as long as they are dosed carefully.

Streams in this group

  • Soapstock and acid oils from vegetable oil refining
  • Gums and other refining residues
  • Off-spec or contaminated vegetable oils
  • Fatty residues and fat-rich process water from food production
  • Used cooking oil, where it is not already committed to biodiesel

What I check

  • Fat content and free fatty acids
  • Water and solids
  • Origin: plant-based or animal, and the ABP category if animal
  • Sulphur, salts and pH
  • Whether the material stays pumpable at normal temperatures

About used cooking oil

Used cooking oil mostly goes to biodiesel, and in much of Europe that market is well organised. I am not a UCO trader. I look at it when a batch does not fit the biodiesel route, or as part of a wider package of fatty streams.

Other feedstocks I work with

Crude glycerine for biogas

By-product of biodiesel and oleochemicals. Very rich in energy when the glycerol content is reasonable.
