Feedstocks

Molasses, syrups and starch-rich liquids for biogas

Sugar and starch convert to gas quickly and completely. Liquids rich in them, from off-spec syrups to starch slurries, can be an easy and efficient addition to a feedstock mix.

Streams in this group

  • Molasses and off-spec syrups
  • Glucose and sugar solutions
  • Starch slurries and starch-rich process water
  • Rinse water and batches from sweets, drinks and bakery production

What I check

  • Dry matter and sugar or starch content
  • pH, since sugar-rich liquids can be acidic
  • Preservatives or cleaning agents that may disturb a digester
  • Viscosity and how the material can be loaded

Good to know

Because sugars are digested so fast, plants dose them steadily. A supplier with a regular stream is usually easier to match than a single large batch.

Other feedstocks I work with

Crude glycerine for biogas

By-product of biodiesel and oleochemicals. Very rich in energy when the glycerol content is reasonable.
